Consider artists and works of art through unique and unexpected lenses. Explore connections that are not often addressed in the traditional canon of Art History as well as discuss underrepresented artists from both Western and non-Western cultures. Contemplate the role that the broader society (social, political, economic, etc) had in shaping our understanding of these works within the historical periods in which they were created.
March 3: Moving beyond the Academy
By breaking with the longstanding tenants and traditions of artistic training under the auspices of the great Art Academies of Europe, “Modern” artists such as Vincent van Gogh, Georges Seurat, Edgar Degas and many others fundamentally changed the manner in which art was created and viewed in the 19th century. However, it was more than just a rebellious streak against the establishment that was the source for their radical approach to artmaking. Join us to consider some of the inspirations and technological advancements that influenced these artists and allowed them to break so completely with tradition.

Jane Royal has been working in museums as an educator for more than 25 years. She has worked with the collections at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Museum of Modern Art, The Whitney Museum of American Art, the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, Reynolda House Museum of American Art, and the Jewish Museum, among others. In her work, Jane is particularly interested in the ways that the study of visual material culture can be integrated into the exploration and understanding of History as well as in the development of visual literacy and critical thinking skills for all audiences. She earned a BA in Art History from Davidson College, a Graduate Certificate in Museum Studies from the Harvard University Extension School and a MEd from the Harvard University Graduate School of Education.
